Western Forests, Mountains & Coasts

Great Basin Bristlecone Pine (Pinus longavea) at moonrise.  White Mountains, California.

This collection reflects an admittedly heterogeneous set of regions, topographies and habitats.  They are not, however, unrelated.  Sediments from the Sierras feed into streams, provide mineral inputs for soils far down-river, and eventually line coastal beaches.  Nor is the flow of nutrients and minerals only seaward: for millions of years, in the coastal redwood and temperate rain forests that once stretched from California to Alaska, migrating Salmon have annually brought critical nutrients from the sea that have fueled the growth of our largest trees and most verdant habitats.  This input from the ocean has now been terminated in many places, and is threatened everywhere, by the decline of wild salmon populations under the effects of human dams, irresponsible logging, pollution and over-fishing.
